Offer vs. Serve

Offer versus Serve (OVS) is a system designed to decrease food waste and give students greater flexibility in choosing what they eat for school breakfast or lunch.

General OVS Requirements for Lunch:

  • Students must take 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetables and 2 additional components in full serving sizes.
  • Students are entitled to take all offerings if they so desire.

What's for lunch?
For a meal that is reimbursable under USDA regulations, students must be offered a lunch that contains:

  • 5 food components...
  • We must meet the daily and weekly minimum serving sizes and stay within the calorie, fats, and sodium limits.

The 5 food components include:

  • Meat/Meat Alternate
  • Grains WGR
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Milk in a variety

The 5 food components at lunch are:

  • Meat/Meat Alternate
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Grains
  • Milk

What's for breakfast?

  • Students will be offered at least 4 food items from the 3 food components:
  • We must meet the daily and weekly minimum serving sizes and stay within the calorie, fats, and sodium limits.

The 3 food components for breakfast are:

  • Grains WGR
  • Fruit/Juice (100%)/vegetable
  • Milk in a variety

The School Breakfast Program (SBP) provides a nutritious morning meal before the school day begins. It meets the vital need of feeding children who may not otherwise eat a nutritious breakfast. Schools operating the SBP report increases in test scores, decreases in absenteeism, and an overall improvement in student behavior when children eat breakfast.
